A lot is changing in the world of digital marketing right now. 2018 could be a pivotal year for the way people buy from and interact with small businesses. Are you going to grow this year – or will Google, Amazon, and savvy local competitors pass you by? On January 30th, I will be presenting Digital Marketing Trends for Local Business with the Boulder Chamber at the Boulder JCC. Here are the top 3 trends from my presentation that you need to keep an eye on in 2018 to stay relevant and if you really want to make sure you are ready for the year, register for the event here!
1) The Retail Apocalypse
Google and Amazon have changed the way that we buy things. Shopping malls and retail spaces all across the country have been in a continued decline over the past few years due to the high demand of online shopping from places like Amazon and Google. A new service from Google, Google Service Ads, could start affecting your service area business as Google makes it possible to hire contractors, plumbers, landscapers, and more all from the Google search results! How could that affect your business? This is a trend that you need to pay attention to this year in order for your business to remain competitive.
2) Online Reviews Have and Increased Influence on Rankings + Purchasing Decisions
The trust of reviews and the internet overall is increasing. Hackers and the dark web aside, people are really starting to trust the internet. In the last presidential election, there was a phenomenon called the Search Engine Manipulation Effect which former editor of psychology today writes about that states that trust and influence in the internet is so high that people have a profound subliminal influence on their voting behaviors.
So how does this translate to your small business? Well, it turns out that you can manipulate your presence online to subliminally influence people to buy from you. One way to do this is through reviews. Awhile back, we did an experiment with reviews to see if we could change the rankings of a restaurant by leaving a review about their chicken wings. A few weeks after leaving a review with the words “best chicken wings,” we noticed that the restaurant was ranking in local searches for “best chicken wings near me.” So, how are you going to use this trend to your advantage in 2018?
3) The Way People Communicate with Small Businesses is Changing
In 2017, Google made it so that customers can text businesses through their Google listing with a feature called Google Chat. In 2018, we are predicting that there will be increased use of this feature as well as things like Facebook Messenger and texting. Overall, this will affect the way that people communicate. You will need to have faster response times if you expect to get new customers, so make sure you are prepared and make sure you answer your phone!
Are you going to grow this year – or will Google, Amazon, and savvy local competitors pass you by? 2018 will be a year of big change in the way your customers discover and purchase goods and services, and at our 2018 Digital Marketing Trends For Local Business workshop with the Boulder Chamber on 1/30/18, you’ll learn exactly where to focus your marketing efforts this year.
