I’ve been in business for nearly eight years and it’s been great… but it has also been really hard. Today, I wanted to share with you The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Running a Digital Agency. This is is a recording of my 2017 presentation from SearchCon, an SEO conference in Breckenridge.
One of the great things about running a digital agency is that I love the work we do. I work with a lot of really great people who really care about what they are doing. Also, the work that we do has a huge impact on our clients, it makes a real difference to their sales. It’s always nice to know that we are making a real difference in our client’s lives.
I am thrilled to have been recognized as one of Boulder Valley’s 40 under 40 which is an award for young professionals under 40 who are making a difference in the community. It was amazing to be recognized for that because I’m not from Boulder. When I moved here, I knew one person and really built Ramblin Jackson from the ground up. It’s great to know that you can work really hard and over time, have great success. I really couldn’t do it anywhere else but Boulder, Colorado due to its outstanding entrepreneur community, especially with the Boulder Chamber.
One of the bad things along the way was back when we had terrible cash flow. There was a time when Ramblin Jackson had awful money problems and a couple of years where I nearly went out of business. We had more expenses than revenue and one of the things that I did to change that was becoming transparent with my team about money. How weird! There was a time when I kept that all a secret and I was embarrassed by it, but it didn’t work. Once I started letting my team know, here are the revenue goals, here are the open invoices we have, and once I started paying my sales people when we got paid, all of the sudden the team rallied behind the goals and our cash flow improved. There actually haven’t been any cash flow issues since I implemented that nearly a year and a half ago.
The ugliest moment of running my agency was during that time of poor cash flow. I was working so much during that time that I stopped exercising. I had terrible back pain, I could hardly sleep at night, and I just wasn’t taking care of myself. That was a really ugly moment that not only impacted Ramblin Jackson, but also my family life. It impacted everything.
So, I started rock climbing, and practicing yoga and Pilates. I realized that maintaining your health throughout everything is so critical to help you get through those bad times.
