Hey Siri, find me the best CPA Boulder.
“Ok, here’s what I found”
You may think, “my customers don’t look for businesses like mine on Yelp,” and you may be right. But in today’s video, I’ll share why Yelp may still be relevant to your Local SEO strategy and what you need to do about it.
Yelp’s Integration with iOS
While Apple Maps sources business listings data from trusted data providers like Factual, Foursquare, TomTom, Acxiom, Localeze, Yext, and other attributed providers, they source their reviews data, as well as photos and other info, from Yelp.
Since 2012, Yelp has been a core part of iPhone’s operating system. With iPhone as the second most-used smartphone platform, there’s a strong chance that your potential customers will use Yelp in some capacity from their phone when researching local businesses.
Voice searches are surging
According to a recent study from Google, How Mobile Search Connects Consumers to Stores, 30% of all mobile searches are related to location. In the last year, mobile searches for “stores open now” or “food open now” have more than doubled. See my recent post for more complete details about how to rank in “near me” searches. If people voice search on their iPhone – there’s a strong chance they’ll get Yelp results, and you want to be one of them.
Yelp ranks strongly in Google searches for your brand name
Another thing to consider is that your Yelp profile likely ranks no the first page when people Google your brand name. This could be someone wanting to find your phone number, directions, store hours, or maybe a referral doing some online research. In any case, it’s best to have strong ratings on your Yelp profile so they see stars on the first page of Google for all of your directories.
What to do about it
So, even if people aren’t searching directly on Yelp for businesses like yours, hopefully you can see that they may indirectly encounter your brand there. Here are three things you should do:
1) Claim and optimize your Yelp Listing
- Create your business Yelp listing at at biz.yelp.com.
- Be sure that all the business information is complete & accurate.
- Complete the sections for Specialties, History, and Bio.
- Add Photos! More photos will help your ranking.
- Upload photos with optimized file names and add captions.
- Promptly reply publicly to each Yelp review – either positive or negative.
- Attributes: Check in to your business via a personal Yelp Account and add Attributes as a customer.
2) Get Reviews on Yelp
Get at least two. Two will show as stars if someone sees your listing in Google search results

3) Pass On Yelp Advertising Unless It’s Really A Great Fit For Your Market
Unless you’re a vegetarian restaurant in San Diego, California, you likely do NOT need to advertise on Yelp. You can have a free listing on Yelp and that should be more than enough. In some cases an Enhanced Listing may be helpful, but Yelp Ads are likely not helpful to you unless you’re in an industry in which people are actively searching for your business type like restaurants. Consider an Enhanced Profile if you are in an industry that is popular on Yelp.
